THE AGRICULTURE department is spending P506 million for irrigation and infrastructure projects to support the farm and fisheries sectors in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

In a statement on Friday, Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said the bulk of the fund -- P268 million -- will go to the repair and rehabilitation of several irrigation systems in the provinces of Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Benguet that were damaged by recent typhoons, including portions of the Banaue Rice Terraces.

The department said it has committed P20 million to restore the Banaue Rice Terraces.

Mr. Alcala said the department will also be putting up village-type rice processing centers worth P120 million and providing four-wheel tractors worth P48 million.

More than P47 million for hand tractors, the establishment of fishponds, coffee seedling nurseries and greenhouses will also be provided, the department said.

The Agriculture department said it will also provide P2 million to upgrade a municipal agriculture trading center in the municipality of Lamut in Ifugao. -- Louella D. Desiderio
