Position Overview
Rare is seeking 1-2 Investment Officers to be based in its Philippines office in Manila and Jakarta office in Indonesia. S/he will be responsible for managing the design and implementation of critical interventions for Rare’s sustainable markets work in fisheries in the Philippines, and to help build and manage Rare’s Meloy Fund in the country.

The Meloy Fund is a $20M impact investment fund devoted to providing debt and equity capital into scalable enterprises that can play a key role in incentivizing sustainably managed community small-scale fisheries, contributing to the maintained integrity and functioning of coral reef ecosystems in Indonesia and the Philippines. It will be the first impact investment fund focused entirely on community small-scale fisheries in the developing tropics.

Reporting to the country Portfolio Manager, the key responsibilities of the Investment Officer will include:

• Identify, cultivate and execute a pipeline of fresh investment opportunities for the Meloy Fund;
• Conduct research into new investment opportunities for the fund’s portfolio, and structure and execute investments, including detailed financial modeling;
• Portfolio supervision, including reflows and reporting;
• Develop and implement a post-investment management strategy to add significant value to investee companies, including social and environmental impact;
• Develop close relationships with Meloy Fund investees, including representing the fund on portfolio company boards; and
• Build alliances with key private sector actors in fishery value chains to establish productive commercial linkages between fishing communities and social enterprises;
• Design and evaluate key metrics to measure the environmental, social and financial returns on investments.

Experience and Education
The ideal candidate will be dynamic, entrepreneurial, and high-energy, with the ability to work productively with CFOs and senior financiers as well as local, in-country community leaders. S/he will be creative, analytical and organized a strong communicator with impeccable writing skills. Demonstrated success in managing a variety of high-impact initiatives from concept through completion with explicit outcomes and strong project management skills are prerequisites for success in this role. Other qualifications include:

• 3-5 years’ experience creating viable business opportunities, value chain development, marketing and export promotion, private enterprise development, or the provision of investment products;
• Strong finance background and financial modelling skills;
• Knowledge of current environmental and sustainability issues, SME development, supply chains, micro-finance and investment products, as well as experience in the developing world;
• Exceptional stakeholder engagement, communications and influencing skills; ability to operate, and communicate effectively in cross-cultural environment;
• Ability to work in a challenging and dynamic entrepreneurial context; agility to respond to emerging business opportunities;
• Ability to travel nationally and internationally;
• A genuine passion for delivering significant social and environmental impact
• Prior experience in an international, cross-cultural work environment is essential with willingness to work flexible hours on an as-needed basis to serve the needs of a global organization with diverse time zones;
• BS/BA required; MBA or relevant Master’s degree preferred; and
• [Tagalog / Bahasa Indonesia] language skills required.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands
The task requires both office work and field visits.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; typical work days and hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, there may often be times when longer work hours are required.
