Application programming service to add revenues

Posted on October 11, 2013

SMART Communications, Inc. has teamed up with software developer Youphoric Labs to provide free application programming for developers in a deal the telecommunication firm said will provide a new revenue source.

“This partnership is a revenue-sharing agreement between Youphoric and Smart wherein Smart will provide the network and Youphoric will provide the software,” Jim D. Ayson, Smart senior manager for Partner Management and Developer Relations, said in a press briefing yesterday.

He added that the service called SMS-API (short message service-application programming interface) is designed to enable users to launch SMS-based promotion or contests within minutes.

“Through this service, non-programmers can deploy SMS-based apps for subscriptions, trivia contests, notifications, customer service, information on demand, polling, coupon subscriptions, coupon pulls and promos,” Smart said.

While the service is free for developers, subscribers to their applications will pay P2.50 per SMS.

“The business model is new to Smart,” Mr. Ayson said, adding the company expects “incremental revenue” from the new offering.
